The
Dude http://arttower.ru/forum/topic2039.html How this drawing was created on the computer using Corel Painter version 8 (Just about any painting software will work, but Painter is awesome) You need to have a basic knowledge of Painter, like how to use layers and brushes and that sort of stuff. eMail your ideas and questions to: nate@nateowens.com |

1. In Painter, make a new layer. On this you can draw a bunch of loosey-goosey ovals. These represent different parts of the dude... nose, eyes, face, ear, hat, hat brim and chin. |
|
2. The ovals layer is set to a 25% opacity and locked. 3. On a new layer I start sketching the details of the dude's face using the ovals as a guide |

4. Continue drawing the face... keep it loose and be innovative. This is a caricature and since it's not of a specific person, you can relax... give him the evil eye... make him tough and grungy. |

5. You can slide your layer around as you like to line up the parts to the oval guide to suit the drawing as it develops. Rough edges get cleaned up later. |

6. After doing most of his face and hat he was looking sort of lopsided. I flopped the layer horizontally. Painters often use mirrors in their studio to check compositions and figure drawings. |

7. I copied the brim from the right side of the art and put it on the left side. Also made a few other changes to correct the drawing of the face and the hat. Save often! |

8. Flip the art horizontal again. 9. Select the outer area and invert the selection. On another layer beneath the drawing I fill this selection with white. Save this selection. |

10. On the drawing layer, make sure all gaps in lines are closed. Use the paint bucket to fill areas with flat color. Keep colors light. They will get darker as you work. |

11. Load the selection saved in step 9 (or just select the background and invert it). 12. Make a new layer above the drawing layer. Set to multiply. Lock the drawing layer so you don't paint on it. |

13. Paint on this new layer. The back-ground is protected, you don't have to worry about it. Use the tint brushes. |

14. Work to get good modeling, lights and darks and keep your colors clean. Don't worry about the little details, they come later. Keep your light source and shadows consistent. | ![]() |
15. Lock your color layer and go to the drawing layer. Use a cover brush (I used the oils) and with colors from adjacent areas, paint out the black outlines. |

16. Lock the drawing layer. Go back to the upper color layer, keeping the selection open that protects the background. Make sure the layer is in multiply mode and use the tint brushes to define edges and details. | ![]() |
17. After defining depth and shadows, drop all layers. 18. Add the final details, hair, teeth, bandana pattern, etc. The final art is shown at the top of this page. |
